A pond
« on: April 29, 2024, 02:05 »
I dont know if I should be posting this here

I am building a pond in my garden

I have the pond, but it has to be buried 50% in the ground

I am building it with a pump, filter and a waterfall

I want the waterfall to be surrounded by plants

But I dont know what kind to use

(I have found a picture on line that someone has used (and what there finish pond is like)

Any idea what flowers they are ?

It's all about the journey, not the destination

They look like plants sold in the alpine section of the garden centre to me, with a couple of bits of summer bedding.  I’m assuming because the depth of the planter bit is fairly shallow and it suits small compact plants like that.

I think there is a campanula in there, a phlox, a dianthus and a small grass.  Most alpines flower in spring and early summer, so it looks like a couple of diascias have been included to extend the flowering season.

I have now found someone prepared to dig the hole for my pond

He asked me the size of the hole, I said 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and 2 feet deep

He said ‘Are you burying a body?’

I showed him the pond going into the hole

He used to be a grave digger, so it should be a fairly simple job for him

I’ve got several water butts to fill it, but not enough water, so it will be refilling them with tap water

(Then using a tip I know about for removing chlorine, Camden tablets, they work well in wine making)

Oh, well I have to build the surround, then get a filter, good thing I have a spare pond pump

Sounds like a plan  :)

You might find that the chlorine from the tap water would dissipate naturally over a few days?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It’s finally all coming together now

I am glad to say, I’m keeping my original pond, but just for an ornamental pond and the wild life, plus the birds like the water fall for a bath

I’ll post pictures as it progresses

The hole for the pond has now been dug, its just a dry fit at the moment
I have to get some soft sand to go in the bottom just to level it up

Any suggestions for plants to surround it, taller plants at the back and smaller at the front and side, please

Maybe something in keeping with any plants you are putting your pond. Grasses, Iris, heucheras, and maybe one or two annuals so you can ring the changes. It will also be a place for insects and maybe either frogs or toads to hide in. Don't forget to put something in the pond at the edge like a stone or a piece of log so they can get out if needed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

It will be partially buried, about 18 inches above ground, so the chances of frogs getting in there are pretty slim
I havent seen frogs in my garden for many years now
The bugs and bees like the pond plants in my other pond
There are lots of bugs and insects living in my old pond (one of the reasons I am keeping it)
My old pond just has rain water in it, bit cloudy, but clean filters will sort that out
