Line em with compost bags (any thick plastic bag....but bin liner/thin plastic deteriorates very quickly)
They wouldn't hold a lot of soil, i personally doubt they would be deep enough for onions/garlic... but someone may come along who disagrees with me LOL

many thanks for your replies.

I will give them a go with some salad veg and may try a few onions/garlic in as an experiment. If they dont work i can transfer them.
