Hello,

Whats the difference between layer pellets and layer mash? What does pellets do that mash dont?

if i switch over to mash, do i need todo anything to it?

I noticed people say about using grit with the mash, my hens always have oyster grit available, 24/7

The only difference is one is a dry mix (pellets), the other you have to mix with water (mash). Sometimes when it's really cold I will mix some hot water into the pellets to give them a warm mash mix, a bit of fishy cat food, and a handful of corn all mixed together as a treat.

if you decide to feed mash mixed with water then please change it every day as it can go off rather quickly, also mash can be quite messy.
Staffies are softer than you think.

You can feed the layers mash dry, it is similar to consistancy to chick crumb.  You can always mix it with a little of the layers pellets when you are changing from one to the other.  Some hens are fussy but mine loved layers mash when I was given some.  I think they preferred it even though it contains the same ingredients.  ::)

Most people feed pellets because the chooks do not waste them in the way that mash gets spread about. So they are more economical and you are not constantly clearing up tp prevent rodents! :)

I buy layers pellets, and serve it everyday, 1 x feeder with pellets, and 1 x feeder with pellets that have been slightly soaked with warm water so like a mash....I generally then add a tspn of poultry spice into the soaked pellets, and they love it.

But like Joyfull said, wet pellets or mash need to be changed every day, whereas the dry stuff doesn't.

We always use pellets, much less messy than mash.

No real difference same ingredients just a different format

Personaly we normally use Mash (dry), now mainly out of habit though we were advised to get Mash when we first started as supposedly its a little bit more trickier for them to eat thus they spend more time eating and less time getting bored and into mischief.  ;) Whether that is the case who knows..............

Have at times had to use pellets when we couldnt get the usual mash and our lot didnt seem to mind the switch though i have read that this can be an issue. Mash can certainly be a little messy though to be fair they managed to scatter the pellets just as much so whether there is an arguement there for using pellets I'm not sure. The one advantage i do find with Mash is thats its a lot easier to mix in other ingredients like poultry spice etc but that not a huge thing.
