courgette
« on: August 31, 2019, 17:25 »
its been a good year for  picking courgette but a lot of our courgette's have got quite big we tried to give some away but no one seemed interested in cooking courgette we have around 20 large courgette sitting in the greenhouse to use

a friend of ours  who is a chef and a very good cook with courgette recipes he gave us a few courgette recipes to use up our large courgettes because we hate throwing good veg on the compost heap like some of my gardening friends told me to do with these courgettes

is it me or have courgette and marrows gone out of favour for cooking does the new generation of cooks no how to cook courgette and marrow although winter squash I notice does sometimes come up in a restaurant menu  ::)

I tend to find that when giving them away, don't let them get too big, that seems to put people off, also their enthusiasm may wane a bit after two or three lots!

That said, we do have a couple of enthusiastic recipients of them still.....maybe because I grow several different types which sparks some interest.

I love courgette, but once they get large I find the flavour goes and they get very watery, same with marrows. I don't find it worth my time trying to make something of them when there are so many other tasty options at this time of year.

If mine get a bit too big and lose their flavour I split them lengthways and give them to my chickens - they devour them. If you have a friend with chickens they could be a lovely treat for them.
Ever tried? Ever failed? No Matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail Better.

Slice thinly lengthways then fry in tempura (lager) batter.  Luverly.

Have you tried making jam with them? I'll post my recipe in the cooking section.

we have been told both marrow and courgette make a good base for some meals IE curry mixes and stews and jams it looks like picking courgette and marrow is never ending down the allotments although we shouldn't complain could have ended up with none then we would have complained wouldn't we but look on the bright we are side still giving them away to those who want them so there not actually wasted  ;)

Space saving courgettes. Lots of pole left to train it up as well.

Cheers,  Tony.

Pop a few in the freezer, just picked, then chopped small, no blanching or fiddling around...

Great for winter soups and casseroles!

I second the chicken suggestion. My chickens love them and I like to give them vegetables to enhance and mix up their diet. A few chucks can make short work of even a large, thick-skinned courgette.

I can never get enough of them though.

Otherwise - base for a soup.

If it looks like a courgette, its a courgette, right?
