Greenhouses...what a price!!! any tips....
« on: December 26, 2013, 20:50 »
I am looking for a greenhouse to replace a big shed in my garden but didn't expect it to be so expensive!
My hubby's friend is a builder who often helps us out so I was thinking with his help we might be able to DIY build something...any one had any success making their own?

I will continue to check the second hand sites to see if any are going cheap there.

Thanks

If you were to build one i doubt if you could do it cheaper. Try ebay . There are many  on there as cheap as chips. Only problem is that you normally have to dismantle and take away.

I looked about and found some pretty ugly home made greenhouses, ok if just to be practical but not when its going to be seen from the house.
Will save up and look again next year.  :)

Look out locally for a 2nd hand one you can dismantle and rebuild - there are bargains about  ;)

What about contacting a double-glazing firm for old units?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I got mine on ebay for £40ish. Most 8'x6' ones seem to go for £50-100ish at the minute. If you can rope in some help you can get it dismantled and home in a day. The ones that are pre-dismantled seem to go for higher prices, but it's actually really helpful to take the thing down as you have more of an idea where and how everything goes.

combined potting shed and green house may give you more use from structure - look at Dunster House for example or poly-tunnel will be cheaper per square foot of ground space. Both have their pros and cons though. Fully support ideas already given of looking for advertised greenhouses to buy and dismantle and reassemble at yours. Usually very cheap and can negotiate down.
Good Luck

I bought a greenhouse/shed combo from Dunster House last year. It wasn't all that and some of the wood was a bit dodgy. It was delivered in (literally) hundreds of pieces and the instructions are not that great. The delivery driver was rude, very unhelpful and couldn't get away fast enough. I still have leaks in the greenhouse that, due to the design, seem impossible to sort out. I wouldnt recommend them.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

Keep a look out on Freegle/Freecycle, that where I got mine from last year. Took me and my wife five hours to dismantle it but well worth the time.  I'm not in he process of sorting out the base before putting it all back together, which will be fun.  You could also try Gumtree
Built for comfort, not speed!

We had a great greenhouse off ebay. It was being sold just a few miles from us and it was 14ft by 8ft I think we paid £400 for it hubby dismantled it with the owner. We looked at that size greenhouse new and it was over £800, I love my greenhouse.
