Re-Stock in Spring
« on: October 23, 2009, 12:44 »
I want to get 4 more girlies in the Spring.  I have a black rock and 3 brown ones at the moment ('don't know what breed they are, as they were gifts).  Can anyone recommend which ones I should go for?  Would like another couple of black rocks as she is a consistent layer, but what else I don't know.  I do not want table birds as I couldn't do that, I just want good layers and friendly girlies.

Light Sussex are good layers, pretty birds too even if they do show the mud. :D

im gonna have to be biased here and say a cuckoo maran, i have one and she is my babe, she is soooooo friendly and has a massive personalty, shes the first one in the kitchen in the morning and if i open the back door for a second shes in, shes a good layer, carnt say enough about them really, she was a bit flightly when i first got her but when she moved to the position of top hen she really mellowed.  nickyx

I've got eight different hybrids. My Mabel, a Cuckoo Maran hybrid, is lovely  :D Always chuntering away at me and never minded being picked up right from the start. Very silky feathers too. My Sybil a White Star hybrid, lays like theres no tomorrow  :D Lovely big white eggs. She's happy to be held too and sometimes starts to nod off  ::) They are lovely in all their own ways  :D
8 chickens, 5 cats, 2 guinea pigs and 1 other half.

I agree they are all lovely, I find myself rushing home and apologise to them for leaving them alone.  Am I nuts or what.

I find my two hybrid Light Sussex are very skittish at any and every little thing.... constantly squawking and setting all the other girls off.
Why then, did I buy pure LS eggs to hatch, I ask myself.  Quiet and calm so far at 18 weeks old today.

My Light Sussex was really skittish at first , now it`s the tamest. The Rhode Island Red on the other hand is now frightened of its own shadow and the food dish , i`m sure it`s neck is getting longer as it often tries to eat and stay away from the dish at the same time.
I guess you cannot guarantee temperament by breed. :D
