Metal Coop??
« on: February 27, 2013, 21:00 »
I want to double (at least) my flock and have the chance of buying an 8 x 6 metal shed.  Would this be suitable for chickens, provided I kit it out with perches & nest boxes??

While you used to be able to get galvanised Broody coops . I think you may have a condensation problem using one all year round ,just a thought .

I have a metal shed, it's terrible for condensation in the cold weather, everything get very damp and rusty unless I put things in plastic tubs etc. I should imagine with hens breathing inside the shed it would be a hundred times worse.

If it is a plastic shed i would say no not sure but know they make plastic animal housing but think these have insulation so they dont get too cold or hot they are specially made for the purpose ...

Another no to putting perches in a metal shed for reasons stated. On the other hand you could put a wood (etc) coop inside which would not need to be weatherproof. Put uprights in corners and midway down sides and raise the roof 300mm to get air flow through. I did this -but not for chickens - and it did work. You'll need a flat concrete base. Depends on costs, but, once the base is down, a concrete block with plastic roof might be cheaper and more user friendly.

On the whole then it doesnt seem a good idea...... I might take the shed anyway & just use iot for ordinary storage.  Its just I need a bigger coop & having spent the equivilent of a third world country's debt so far on setting up my 'hobby'  my other half is not very supportive in me spending more!!!!  Thanks for the comments guys...watch this space...

Costwise, I have easily gone into 4 figures over the last nearly 3 years of having hens. That doesn't include the hens, feed or vets fees
