Just today, Mrs G had a brainwave regarding the runner bean glut.
She just chucked them in the liquidiser after a short boil, and asked me to comment on the flavour!
I thougth it was squash, as they're rampant at the moment, but no, they are superb in soups, and so I went and took off the rest (not the enormous chaps which will go for next year's seed), and we made about 4 lbs of puree for the freezer!
It must be a good bet for those long winter evenings which are supposed to fly by...!
This may well be an old way, and done by most good people here, but they look and smell gorgeous!

Mmmmm, interesting Growster! I put runner beans into stews, but never tried runner bean soup. Another idea for my list! ;)
-
I have a friend who says runner bean soup is nice - not found a recipe yet though. Just googled it - found a few and basically it looks pretty easy. Might try it on OH.

I juiced some last year  I wont be juice them this year (http://planetsmilies.net/vomit-smiley-7502.gif) (http://planetsmilies.net)

I had never considered using runner beans as a main ingredient for a soup. Green soup tasting of runner beans.
But... after one quick search I've found a recipe that looks worth trying so... many thanks for the idea Mr G. Appreciated. :)
Green bean soup link (http://www.greenchronicle.com/recipes/green_bean_soup.htm) Worth a try I think.
-
great way to freeze and add to mixed soup or stews thanks.

Thanks All - the one we had yesterday evening did have lots of other veg in as well, including kale, which is great for substance and also dark colouring, but we were particularly happy with the bean taste and texture!
I think we'll use a few ounces each time, and vary the flavours with leeks and parsnips when I'm allowed down to 'The Patch' to harvest them (which is not yet, but I can't wait...)!

I was scratching my brains for something to use the runner beans up.
Chutney - check
Sliced / blanched / frozen - check
Soup??
The recipe link looks easy enough so will give it a go today and like the idea of storing the 'sauce' For the winter stews. I've got a load of over-sized French beans that I intend to pod and dry / freeze to use so the runner bean sauce will be ideal.

Strangely enough I had been looking at runner bean soup recipes this week and wondering if they would be nice. I thought the texture might be a bit strange, perhaps I will give it a go now and try. This grow your own is getting expensive - I have just had to buy a second freezer as I have no room at all left in my old one! Still winter food shopping should be significantly cheaper! :)

I could dehydrate them too ready cooked.

I have never tried it myself, but I have a few wine making books and more than one has sworn by runner bean wine! Someone try it and let me know? i'm not brave enough :tongue2:

Tried the runner bean soup this evening. Was really nice with garlic bread and Parmesan.

Hadn't thought of Parmesan, Yana - shades of Minestrone...?

We were wondering about runner bean wine, but veg wines tend to take ages to finish and mature, and we can't wait that long...!
Peapod Burgundy was a staple in The Good household wasn't it!

Made some for tomorrow's lunch. Just beans, onion, garlic and a pinch of veg stock powder....and celery salt and pepper. Might be a bit sweet so a dollop of sour cream might go with, or as Yana said, strong cheese.
-
Nice one Tosca, we're also going to try the Parmesan, or whatever that brick-like thing in the fridge is...
Incidently, I love white pepper on baked beans, so it might also work here as well!
-
Got some over sized runners and french going to try them tomorrow in the slow cooker whilst i'm up the lotty and then purree them for the dehydrator will keep you posted.
-
Good way Rachel!
Let us know what happens!
-
The sour cream and some freshly snipped chives did the trick. Wouldn't want it every day but a good way of using the runners up. :D
-
What dehydrator do you have Rachel? I want to get one but am sooooooo confused as there are so many and the prices vary dramatically.

Hi Yana mine is a cheap import from the usa as oh works for the yanks. It has 4 round baskets which stack and a plastic tray for friut leathers, but cling film works ok too. I guess it depends on the volume you dry. I've not had mine long still experimening only one disaster mouldy tomato leathers needed more time.
So far onion rings, garlic, huauzontle, spinach, courgettes kale, humus and now beans just gone in.
Done apple and pear rings over the stove last year too
Going to try meals too for when I go hosteling.
