[Growster...]

Like most people, I find the work to plant veg like leeks the necessary few inches underground, demands a fair bit of bending, kneeling, a strong dibbling action in often dry or unforgiving soil, and also a bit of muscle here and there.

It can be a tiring job, but eminently satisfying when completed of course!

This year, because the onions are struggling a bit with the dry weather, we decided to go the whole hog on more leeks, to satisfy our continual craving for soups etc in the winter months.

I eventually planted out well over 300 seedlings, in dibbled holes, and the job was made a hell of a lot easier with the dibbler attachment as shown on the pic. In fact I've used it for years, but this year it has been a godsend!

I suppose any planter type of tool would work, (like a bulb planter), but as the lawn aerator shown here is pretty useless, as it clogs up continually, I've attached the dibbler to the cross-bar with some duct tape, and it has been like that for three years, so is probably going to be a bit loose next year...

You do need to ensure that there is a bar across the top of the dibbler, to stop it pushing up, when all you want it to do is push down, which you do exactly like you would with a fork or a spade!

I just like the way it takes the strain out of all thise holes...

Tonight though, while replacing a few lost souls which had succumbed to vanishing disease, I used an old screwdriver, because the dibbler was tucked up at home...

Brilliant for those of us who can't bend much at all, but do you still have to bend to get the leek seedlings into the holes?...

I ususally kneel down to do this Argyllie, as I often do when weeding etc.

After all, why bend the old back at 'disc five' level, when a gentle action on one's knees does the trick!
