hope one of the mechanics can help me with the following
  what is a "Q" type shaft or engine. as i have to replace an obsolete engine with a new one that i can adapt to fit the machine. does the Q relate to the footprint of the base or the shaft size

If you were to look at the engines drive shaft, end on, a "Q" has a small square cut out on it that goes along the shaft, often, for most of it's length. this is where a square "key" fits in to turn the attachment that the engine is powering.

You will still need to check the crank diameter too.

Thank you both for the info re "q" shafts, ive got to replace a honda gx110 ( no longer made i think ), so will fit a gx 120.Any idea as to the life of these engines ,well maintained & serviced, i think this one has done about 1200hours, and needs a full rebuild. so not worth it realy. New engine available for £215 .
