Yes, I had a couple of that design before I bought the helical coil type you may be referring to.
Both the winged ones broke, probably because I was too ambitious trying to heave up great lumps from the bottom to the top of the dalek (the metal one lasted longer than the plastic one, needless to say.
)
The helical coil is still going strong, but needs some care to avoid personal injury if it suddenly comes clear with all your weight (and face) behind it!
