onions bolted!?
« on: June 10, 2009, 17:35 »
Just noticed today that 2 of my onions have bolted (am I understanding that term correctly? i.e. flowered, going to seed?)

Not entirely sure what I can do now, to the flowering onions or to avoid the others doing the same?

Any advice?

Cheers

Mick

Snap the flowering heads off, and use those first. They won't store.

And make sure they don't dry out. My soil dries very quickly and I always water the onions. Give a general feed fertizer. I conserve moisture by covering with a thin layer of grass cuttings.

So does that mean the lack of moisture is what causes the onions to bolt? Should I dig up the couple of onions that have flowered and use them straight away, or leave them in the ground but snap the flowers off?

BTW...how would I get seed from the flowers? is that possible?

Another 2 have bolted!? Now it's had  lot of rain recently so it can't be due to lack of moisture....surely?  ???

I had about 7 or 8 bolt in the space of a few days.  But since then, touch wood, no others have.  I have followed advice on here, snapped the flower head off and am using those ones first.

Some of mine have started to fall over now so I guess they are getting themselves sorted out for picking.

Sorry Mickwood, only just seen this.

I haven't tried it for myself, but I assume it's the same as my Flowering Alliums.
I let them flower, and die back a bit, then cover with a paper bag, cut the flower head off, tie up, and hang it upside down in the shed (or garage in my case) ;) :) then 'bobs y'er uncle'

Although I might be completely wrong, and someone much more knowledgeable will no doubt advise you.....
