OTT on tomatos
« on: January 09, 2013, 13:24 »
Think I might have gone a bit mad when ordering my tomato seeds, as just put in an order for 5 different varieties from Permier Seeds on ebay. They're all rather unusual varieties, so probably hard to grow, and I only have a lean-to greenhouse and a sunny back garden to grow them in!

So, anyone any experience with:

Lemon Plum
Tiny Tim
Brown Berry
Garden Peach
Currant Sweet pea?

No idea where I am going to grow all these, but looking forward to giving it a go!  :D

BTW: what happened to the annual tomato poll this year?

in relation to my last question, for the record, last year:

sweet n neat yellow: yield 7, flavour 8
sweet n neat red: yield 1, flavour 7
Alicante: yield 8, flavour 7
Moneymaker: yield 8, flavour 7
Striped stuffer: yield 7, flavour 9
Black russian: yield 0, flavour 0!
Roma: yield 2, flavour 7
Summer cider: yield 4, flavour 8

These are based - at most - on 2 or 3 plants of each variety, with the "heirloom" varieties performing particularly badly, and the clear winner (as far as I'm concerned) being the Striped Stuffer, which looked good, gave a good number of tomatos and tasted great.

Last year was a bit of a disaster for many tomato growers so I didn't think the results would be a very fair representation of the qualities or otherwise of the different varieties.

In the two previous years it also appeared that there were rather more people interested in the results than actually taking part in the survey, although of course many did make excellent contributions.

3 out of your five choices got a single mention apiece in the 2011 survey which is not what one would call statistically significant, which is probably just as well in the case of two of them!  ;)

The existing tomato and potato popularity polls are still available to view ("child" board of this one.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
