Gave my girls some carrot peelings for a treat at the weekend. Funniest thing I have seen so far as they chased each other around with long trails of peel.
What sets your hens off?
-
Spaghetti :)
They only get a little occasionally but they love it.
-
frogs, mice and mealworms :D
-
Spaghetti, deffinately the funniest I've seen.
-
Cat food is their absolute favourite. Ham rind provokes the Benny Hill pursuit...but anything that's off the corn and grain menu sets them off.
-
Spinach, when I've none growing in the garden they go mad at the sound of a rustling bag! :D Even Wilma who was sitting on eggs, came charging out the coop! ::) Didn't know an orp could move so fast!
-
mine go mad for maggots and grapes
-
Worms!! Spent saturday afternoon helping MIL in her garden - dug up loads of them and gave them to the hens for tea!! They try to sit on the fork when I dig and fight over them!
-
Thought I was going to have a mass breakout from the pen yesterday as I tried to get in to see them. Frantically holding the door almost closed (6 chicken heads in the way!) I discovered they were trying to get a cache of corn, mealworms and new grass that was stuck between the door and it's frame. My daughter cannot reach to throw treats over the top of the fence so puts handfulls through the latch hole. Some of this has been collecting at the bottom out of reach. I'll have to watch this in case it brings rats in.
I've seen a few people mention cat food now, I hadn't realised chickens would scavenge on meat although I suppose it's not that much further up the food chain from insects and slugs.

Mine go mad for strawberries. Hubby grows them in the greenhouse and in tubs in the garden and saves the very small ones or damaged ones for the chooks. They go crazy when he goes in the run with them. So funny to watch..
-
Whole sweetcorn cobs! They go nuts if you lob one of those in their direction :D
I loved it when my chooks used to charge
-
Spaghetti and rice are quite funny as I think they think they are worms/maggots! They also really love grapes and will run around with one in their mouths and chase each other.
-
Cherries for ours, so funny if you throw them in one at a time.
-
Actually I'm starting to think anything I throw into the run sends them silly. Well at least until they know what it is. A handful of young fat hen had them scuttling over this morning

Anything. As soon as they see the treat box (a tupperware container), they go beserk. If I'm carrying yogurt as well (can they smell it?) all hell breaks loose. My OH went into their compound carrying the yogurt once and it was like a scene from "The Birds!" He vowed never to do it again! :D :D

I know the feeling and sympathise with your OH. A couple of mine insist on leaping up to see what's in the box I'm holding, it can be quite scary having these flapping things come flying at face level.
