Autumn planted onions.
« on: March 19, 2013, 20:17 »
I planted my Japanese onions in the polytunnel last Oct/Nov. They started into early growth and the mice then nipped all the tops off!! They seem to be slowly recovering, but will they fully recover? I have plenty other crops I can use the space for.

Only time will tell - they'll certainly benefit from a feed soon.  If it helps, last year I lifted what was left of my winter onions around now and replanted them into pots - they came away well.  So, if you decide you want the space, find some 8-9 inch pots, lift as much of the soil around the onions and replant.  Place the pots directly on the ground and any roots can grow through the pot.  Mix a general fertiliser onto the surface of the pot and leave them be.

They don't need to be in a poly tunnel -  so try them outside next year
