sprouting garlic
« on: March 14, 2009, 17:24 »
my garlic i harvested last year has been stored in my shed and some of them are sprouting.
is there anyway to stop this ? or is it a case of just using it all up?

Either plant them or preserve them. So that's:

1) I always plant garlic both overwinter and in the spring - so get some in now.

2) I preserve by chopping and mixing with parsley and butter then freezing in sausage shapes wrapped in cling film, which are useful for subsequent use as for garlic bread, frying to start off a meal, etc.:

How long can you freeze it for, in the butter before it goes yuk?

If they are only just showing signs of sprouting put them in the bottom of the fridge. That will slow them down and give you a few more weeks to use them.

Just what I was going to say...Ive had supermarket ones that have sprouted within the week, and we use a LOT of garlic, so its not a matter of letting them sit there. Bung them in the fridge

(and make STRONG spag bol  :D )

A cold garage keeps my elephant garlic under control until they are either eaten or replanted. ;)

Um.  I once found and ate some in the freezer that was at least three years old, and it was OK.  It'd been sealed up well, and then worked its way to the bottom of the chest freezer, and I found it when we moved house.  Made decent garlic bread.

Sprouting.......then growing beautifully......... until some chap with a new swoe (type hoe) without his glasses (might have helped) decided to do a quick weed (not that there were any big enough to see from a distance).....

Then....... "BU**ER IT!" I took the swoe in just a little too close and chopped the top off one of them. What a twit.  >:( That'll teach me for being too plot proud this morning.......

Will it re-shoot, do you think?
