Steel Rod Plant Supports
« on: June 16, 2011, 19:00 »
Hi,

Recently watched a repeat of Gardeners World where Monty Don made some plant supports out of steel rods, think they were about 1.8-2 metres lengths of steel, and was wondering if anyone tried this and where I could buy the steel rods at a reasonable price as should work out a lot cheaper than buying ready made supports from a garden centre?

Have done searches online but nothing springs out to me as an obvious choice.

Thanks,

Al

Hi Lazydog,

Yes something exactly like that although Monty was saying they were between £1-£2 each which would be more in my prce bracket.

Cheers,

Al

We're going to try this too. ;) Do you have a local steel stockholder in your area? You'll avoid hefty postage!  OH asked our local steel stockholder, who doesn't actually stock the size used by Monty, but said he would price some for us.

I use old steel conduit rescued from the metal skip at work, where our guys rip out old wiring and replace with new up to modern spec wiring. keep your eyes open especially round industrial estates. if you ask first then its ok to take stuff from skips (most places are happy if they dont fill up so quick as it costs to get them emptied.
