suggest plants for dry/shady and wet/shady spots
« on: October 06, 2012, 09:48 »
Hi everyone,

We're on a corner plot, so the garden wraps around the house. Most of it gets plenty of sun, but the front garden in north facing, so doesn't get any direct sunlight. Close to the house it's quite dry as the rain just doesn't quite get to it, but further away from the house it's quite damp. So could someone suggest some plants that would grow well in those conditions? Also, can you think of any productive plants (fruit/veg/herbs) that would thrive in those conditions? (although I don't like my chances there...)

Thanks in advance,
Juli

Think you will be lucky to get many productive plants growing in dry shade, although in the damper bits you could try comfrey for using in compost or plant feeds.  Some of the softer leafier herbs might be OK - mint would probably cope, lemon balm and possibly coriander, parsley, chervil and chives.  Alpine or wild strawberries would also grow as would sweet cicely.

This is a really useful link for dry shade planting which is the toughest one to plant http://www.alantitchmarsh.com/index.htm?ac=z3bh5-m

This one covers all types of shade

If you decide to grow comfrey, be sure to get a sterile one (Bocking 14) as it is almost impossible to get rid of otherwise and spreads everywhere. Having said that if you grow veg you wouldn't want to be without comfrey really :)
If you want flowers and something to look good there quite quickly I noticed these the other day. A little bit pricey, but no p&p and an instant start. Their jumbo plugs really are jumbo!

But it is probably worth buying a few packets of seed and starting them off in pots outdoors over winter too. :)

j artichokes if you can cope with the hight land cress in damp shade and rhubarb. campanulas and alchemilla molis will cope with some damp/ dry shade and are a good green salad crop.
