Hi, can anyone tell me the best time to split grasses.I have a stipa and some others not sure of the types one has purple flowers/seed head,that are quite big and don't want to lose them by doing it at the wrong time. Cheers

Split grasses in the spring

My RHS book says they can be divided in either spring or autumn, although most gardeners prefer to do so in spring when new growth is visible as the plants establish more successfully.  It's probably getting a bit late in the year now to do it.

Cut down the foliage to 6-8", lift the clump and divide it by hand or with 2 forks.
