Growing fruit
« on: July 29, 2014, 18:03 »
I have two sloping beds in my garden which I used to use for growing veggies but the trouble is that I am finding it hard to cultivate them because I am developing problems with my hips due to O/arthritis. I was thinking of layering them with weed proof membrane and using them for growing fruit, maybe rhubarb, gooseberries, strawberries etc. They get good sun and even though they are on a slope are reasonably moist. One bed is about 15 feet long by 6 wide and the other is about half that.

I do not have much experience with growing fruits (apart from those fruits which we treat as veggies  ;) ) and am wondering if they would grow well on a sloping bed. Plus looking for other suggestions. I would assume that raspberries would not do well.

Thank you in advance for any help.  :)

Strawberries might be awkward as they are only recommended for 3 years before being replaced in a different area. Membrane would be good. Rhubarb, red, black, white current. What about blueberry but you'd need to check the soil as they need acid/ alkaline- never can remember which way. Have you thought of small apple, pear trees?

Springy we have a fruit bed at the from of our plot now it's near where the tap is so all the water leaking away will feed the fruit. We have a row of 7 blackcurrant bushes at the front then 2 apple and one cherry tree  and 2 gooseberry plants spaced out  behind them then once my runner beans are finished we plan to put a row of raspberries in.

??? You must like blackcurrants, I've been overwhelmed with just three bushes and have grubbed up one to try to stem the blackcurrant jam mountain in my cupboard and the blackcurrant glacier in my freezer.

O/A is literally a pain, so perhaps dwarf fruit trees including plums would  be nice and you will have the lovely blossom in spring as well. Raspberries should be ok there but they can spread out of their space.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Isn't it just GG - especially when it stops you doing what you want. One of the beds would be quite good for dwarf trees as it does not slope as bad as the other - now just to get the beds in order and decide what to buy.

Thanks again for all of the comments.  :D
