Sad chicken - help please!
« on: December 02, 2010, 15:39 »
Tilly, my gold wyandotte is looking very sorry for herself at the moment and actually allowing me to pick her up and cuddle her. She is pecking around with the others for food but doesn't seem to be eating much. I can feel her breast bone and not a full crop. I just tried her with a little tuna which she really enjoyed and she has had a few grapes and a little warm mash. She is not as active as the others since her moult and her wings and tail are down. She keeps dozing and her comb is a bit dull. I was wondering whether to bring her in tonight but I don't have a room not in use.
Do you think I should bring her in anyway to a bedroom and see if I can get more food into her?
Her eyes are fine, no wheezing, vent is fine - not egg bound either. No creepy crawlies on her.
Any help would be good - thanks!

I wouldn't but I would keep trying to boost her protein, moulting does really seem to take it out of some chickens  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks joyfull. Just got another load of tuna into her before she went to bed and she was really enjoying it. I have banked up their bedding even more and put a blanket over the house. I managed to speak to the breeder and he said tuna and pasta would help pick her up so I'll do a bit of spaghetti in the morning. I think it is the moult, it's just unfortunate that tonight is going to freeze!

Ah, I was hoping that maybe her problem was a heavy load of worms. It does sound as if she is rather sad. I think you are doing all the right things. Plenty to of good things to eat and good weather protection.

Glad to say she is doing a bit better this morning, she has eaten two small pots of warm mash with finely chopped spaghetti and tuna and then carried on with straight mash. She has also drunk plenty of water with liquid tonic in it. The only thing she hasn't touched is any grit so I hope she's picked up enough from the ground. Her tail is up now, but not her wings as yet. I'll give them all banana and warm mash later as it's her favourite! Thanks for all the support!
