Silly question?
« on: October 21, 2011, 09:19 »
From a naive one.....
I've just bought some flint grit for my "soon to arrive" girls (POL warrens). It looks enormous for those little beaks to eat! (I'm assured it's standard size!) Does this mean that their poo will be gritty?

Where do people dispose of poo? Can it just go on the compost heap? I've used chicken poo pellets on my garden for years, but that's refined!!

Thanks. BG

The grit will be perfect for them. There poop wont be grity though.
We tend to put the chicken poop in the compost bin, it seems to break down reasonably fast.
Don't forget to show us all some photos of your lovely new chickens when they arrive.  :)

Not really sure how to describe grit size I'm afraid.
Poo wobnt be gritty, they store it in their gizzard, sort of like a second mouth I think, or maybe a first stomach, and use it in place of teeth, it wears away eventualy into stuff too small to see.
Mine goes in the compost heap.  Some people say the frwesh stuff is too "strong", but the speed at which areas bounce back after the chickens have been on them for a month is impressive.  Admitadly, if I leave them in place for two months, they reduce it to a barren waste land.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

checked over the weekend, some grit is really small, but then other bits did look unreasonably big, I assume they know what they should and shouldnt eat.

Yea they are not daft heh (well not that daft!)

I wouldnt reject any though, just chuck the lot in and they will pick at what they want.  What ever sized your grit is, you can gaurentee they will dig up somthing worse on their own any way!

Thanks for all the replies.
Do you put your grit in a dish, or scatter it?
I guess the same question goes for oyster shell.
Thanks. BG

Hi bygrace,
I put my grit and oyster shell in bowls the chickens like to scatter it themselves ! it also makes great top dressing for pot plants as the slugs don't like it and leave the plants alone, not that I have many slugs, snails, or bugs in my garden any more! enjoy your chooks they will make you laugh daily

Here's my shell grit.  I keep finding shells buried in the garden so I throw them on the concrete path and stamp on them!  Makes a very satisfying crunching noise and the chickens just pick up what they want.
