I've been building raised beds and shuttering out of old pallets...so far I've been 'weatherproofing' them with Wike's cheapo wood preserver....I had some left over, otherwise I would probably be using creosote.
Anyway, my question is...is it worth it? It took me hours today to paint a pallet fence (for chucking non-compostable stuff behind)...will it really extend the life of the wood or am I better off just letting it weather and replacing the whole thing in x(?) years....?
 :)

ok you are right in preserving it matey . since the assbeuracratsoles decided after 150 yrs or more that cresote was toxic they come up with dodo to use . me i say rolex i use old engine oil and white spirit ina barrel .mix 3 gallon of old oil with a gallon of white spirit n shake it well , then use as creosote . lasts for blooming years . let it dry afore you put anything on it ...... if you lok at old engine rooms in boats the wood used for the engine bed still new inside the oil stains it but i wil say you saw it and its as new .. remember not to treat the insides of chuck houses with any fence treatments ,,, even if it says they are animal friendly

if the timber touches the soil then your looking at 2-3 years max dont matter what you treat it with.unless you get tanalised timber (timber decking, proper edging boards and stuff like that)then you might get 5 years but you dont get that for nowt.you could try and stand the boards up in a bucket of preserver for a day or 2 then turn it around and do the other ends, this way the timber soaks it up through the grain.

put a small fire under a tub of preserver ie oil and it gets deeper into the wood
-
cuprinol do a clear one its like water but realy good realy soaks in well.
i dont like these water based preservers much unless you give it 3-4 good coats of it

you cant beat the smell of creosote a bit like hot tarmac realy

Try and get hold of the plastic barrier used by the road guys, the red and white check board. I built all my raised beds with that plus edged my plot to, then buy some tanalised stakes there not cheap but will be around for a while

Where can you get that without nicking it and letting some old lady fall down a hole in the road?
