Parsnip Seedlings, or Weeds!
« on: May 09, 2012, 20:20 »
Hi, I planted parsnip seeds directly into a seed bed about 6 weeks ago and also planted a few in a pot so that I could identify the seedlings in the bed when they emerged.  The seedlings in the pot have finally sprouted but there appears to be nothing in my seed bed resembling them  :(   According to Google images, the seedlings in the pot are the real thing but I wondered if anyone could identify what is growing in my seed bed?  I am just about to dig it all over as I am fairly confident they are just weeds, but thought I'd check first.  Thank you  :)

I could only attach one photo to my first post.  Here is the second one.

Both weeds.

Borage is a lovely plant, so beloved by bees, so I would keep it

When sowing parsnip direct I mix the seed with radish which grows really quickly, so marks the row where the slow- to-germinate parsnip is  :)

The OP knows what they should look like!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Could the first one be a mustard? Looks just like mine. Try a little taste?

I planted mine about a month ago weeds have come up but I can not identifi the parsnips yet . I was going to hoe the area and reseed but have left it for now. Just put more seeds in another spot that at the moment is weed free. The photos will help when they get a little bigger .
They are slow to germanate even slower this year due to the cold weather. But as it is starting to warm up a little through the night now the seeds should start to move a little.
The only seeds planted so far that have shown are turnips and lettuce. Spring onion. Beet root have been very poor to germanate so I will keep sowing.

Agh!  I did think they were weeds but ever the optimist!  Interesting thought about mustard, I'll try.  Thanks for all the tips.   :)
