Enlarged crop
« on: February 09, 2012, 12:06 »
Here again for more good advice :)

Treacle yet again causing problems -she is the chook producing the softshell eggs i posted  about last week. no eggs layed for past 3 days
She has a very large crop this morning and it feels rather squishy, she has eated the same as the other girls who all have normal size crops and she has not been outside this week  due to the snow so I cannot think of what she may have eaten different to have caused it,only cabbage given as extra this week but none yesterday.

No staw or hay in the coop only wood shavings.

Thanks for your replies,Treacle was
diagnosed with sourcrop so I have her seperate from the others and in the conservatory to keep her warmer,I have fed her  a pea size of soap as advised which I am sure she was not happy about and now she has hiccups

Tomorrow we have to turn her upside down and massage her crop gently to expel whatever mush is in there, then follow up wih applecider vinegar--lovely :)

Soap???   Was it your vet who diagnosed sour crop and suggested soap (does it kill the bacteria?)  I haven't heard that before - can someone educate me please?

My reaction too :tongue2: yuk
I managed to contact the lady who supplied my chooks, she has a lot of experience so I trust her knowledge.Sourcrop is fungal infection and the soap(unperfumed plain stuff)helps to clear  the fungal mush and the cider vinegar helps with digestion afterwards.

all being well Treacle will recover to usual greedy self
