Title: very strange eggs
Post by: french bob on January 16, 2011, 15:52
Hi all, happy New Year to you all.

One of my chucks is laying some very strange eggs. The shell looks like the surface of the moon, pitted, bulges in the shell and small pits, all adding to the general oddness. I have a couple of pictures of one of the eggs but I’m not sure how (if I can) add it to this question.

Her poo is like white sick (sorry) and glutinous. She appears to be ok. Comb and wattle is bright red. The chicken is what I can only call a French generic type bit like a RIR but smaller.

Anyone had the same problem?

How old is she?

Hens do tend to lay the odd (strange looking) egg every now and again, but it does increase as they come to the end of their laying life.

Northing wrong with them, but I would use the ones with weirds shells sonner than a "normal" shell.

Hi Casey,

She is about 2 years old and has only been laying 1 egg a week for some time so she may be getting past her best laying period. I am hoping that the spring warmth will get her going again.

The type of poo she is producing worries me !

Does it smell bad ?
Is she eating well ?

I would give her AviproPlus to improve the gut flora.  If the poo is very slimy she could have a gut infection which some antibiotics would cure.

Hi,

The poo didn't really smell it was just off putting. Since the one lot her poo is more normal but quite small. She is eating well but goes through periods in the day of being quite lethargic just staring into space.

I live in France and AviproPlus is difficult to get I will see if I can find a French equivilent
