Title: Very strange... more eggs per day than hens...?
Post by: bob-the-chick on May 25, 2009, 18:11
So... Yesterday we got 11 eggs from our 10 hens. Very strange and I thought maybe there was one from the night before or something.

However, today, we have 13 eggs (so far). Is this perfectly normal or do we have some extra special birds? Or, I suppose, do we have a problem?  ???

Thanks :-)

  Are they all normal eggs ? ie. soft, very small, etc ?

Should take about 25 hours (I think) for an egg to form fully so there's an anomaly somewhere. Either that or one of them is sneaking out and pinching some from elsewhere.

We have had the odd extra one btu not 2 days on the trot.

Are you sure they aren't nipping down to the shops and buying them???? Look for the lion mark  :) :) :)

Brilliant  :D :D :D

But unfortunately not. They are all normal (all medium size to large eggs). Normal shells and everything. Clearly there's a few of them doubling up. Most confused!

I can't see how they physically do it but maybe one has 2 on the go at once. ie. release an egg, send it through the system and release another before it's finished. No idea if it can happen but if so, it must be exhausting for them.

If you can watch them and try to tell which one lays when, you may be able to work out what's happening.

Just popped them away for the night..... So, make it 14 eggs from 10 hens. That's 4 of our 10 hens laying 2 each today.... Any more suggestions???  ???

Have you checked for any stowaways ?

This happened to ours last month, 4 eggs but only 3 hens. I thought I was going a bit daft, so its great to know it has happened to someone else! :nowink:

I'm not sure what you mean Rob... but if you mean other hens using our nesting boxes, that can't happen as we're in a completely fenced off garden. And as far as eggs go we had cleaned them out so there's no eggs floating around the coop. How different it was at Easter when I posted about my concern that the hens still weren't laying! You were suggesting running a book on when the first would lay  :)

If it were just the odd 11 from 10 hens then I doubt It'd be this newsworthy for me. But 14 from 10????

My sister used to have one chicken that sometimes would lay an egg very early in the morning and another in the evening of the same day. Needless to say, she was her favourite.

I just need to find out which ones are laying two a day... And put my "Free Range Egg's" sign in a more prominent position. We can't give them away fast enough   :D :D

The main thing is to confirm that this is not an unhealthy sign I suppose??? I read somewhere that I should be considering going to the vet with them as there could be something wrong with them.

(I probably shouldn't do so much 'googling' though! Can end up a tad paranoid)

I wish! my lot seem to be on a go slow. 3 from 9 layers one day last week and 5-6 a day since. Not great for this time of year. They have all had flubenvet in their food for the past week - would that put them off?

You dont say what breed they are? I have a white leghorn, and she is capable of laying two eggs a day. This breed of chicken has been in the Guiness Book of Records for laying the most number of eggs. Tho I must admit, we havent actually had 2 eggs in one day, a few massive double yolkers tho!

They are Amber stars.. Although they do look distinctly like they have some 'leghorn' in them. I'm not sure what mix makes up ours exactly. I'll post a photo  :D

So we'll see what we get today... I was on 9 eggs by 1 O'Clock. A few hours to go yet!

Can only comment on our ducks - from 5 females we occasionally get 6 eggs then next day get 4 or 3 then steadies out at 5 each day for a  while then an odd 6 again even though we always collect at same time from a very well defined nest area so no chance we missed one.

My amberlink lays anything up to 3 eggs a day - unfortunately usually soft shelled, although she did a whopping triple yolker, with shell, twice.
After about a fortnight of normal laying as a new layer, she has hardly laid a normal egg. I fear she will run out of egg cells three times faster than the other hen. I hope this laying pattern is not detrimental to her general health.
She sometimes lays a scrunched empty shell - egg liquid is just squished around. I mix loads of cod liver oil and limestone flour into the layers pellets to no avaoile but the blackbirds and pigeons who pinch the chicken food are walking round like Arnold Schwarzenegger

"They`ll be back" then !

Keeping chickens seems to make the wild birds more tame and approachable . Are chicken keepers less scary than other people ?

Can't say our hens ever lay more than one egg a day, but the ambers are a cross between a light sussex and a rhode island red.  the hens take their colouring from the cockerel, which in this case would be the lt sussex, with a smattering of RIR in the feathers.

Our current flock are more white than anything, but the last lot had a lot of browny and fawn colouring in them.

Usually the leghorn crosses lay a white egg don't they?

Would imagine the biggest problem is osteoporosis from the calcium drain. Best make sure they get lots of limestone and cod liver oil like jaws's hens.

Must be a strain on the system.

They are Amber stars..

suddenly everything becomes clear!
they're proper little egg-laying machines, aren't they!

we haven't had two in one day from Jessica yet, but it's come close on a number of occasions (normally one hard shell one soft shell) and sometimes whopping double yolkers too!

I'm pleased others have had more than the 1 egg per day.  I was concerned that there was a problem.

It also allows reason for us getting 10 eggs per day on most days. The girls deciding on giving us a couple are covering up for the lazy ones having a day off (which I pressume they must have occasionally!)  :D
