Zantedeschia aethiopica - Arum Lily
« on: July 22, 2012, 17:17 »
I got a few little babies on e-bay last year and potted them up together and they've grown like fat leeks  :D

So today I've split them and potted the strongest ones up individually - how long before they grow into a bulb/plant that will flower?
or should I give up and buy flowering size plants

I'm guessing these were seedlings, not divisions.

If so, they take about three years before they flower  :D

so last year I bought seedlings (their first year) this year I've grown them on - so - if I'm lucky, I might ge a flower or 2 next year.
That would be nice :) if not the year after should do it!  ;)

Fingers crossed! -  I grew it in my Zante garden and would love to get it growing here as well  :D

It's a shame the Oleanders I have managed to grow here don't flower, they look healthy but no flowers  :( oh well can't have everything I suppose

I have a very lareg white Z aethiopica in the shallow edge of our pond, and it has survived the past few winters with no protection. The stems and leaves turn to mush but up come new stems every year. This year it has had about 20 flowers so far  :D

Oleanders are suposed to be hardy here I thought?

They are borderline hardy, I keep mine in large pots in the greenhouse, each winter, just in case. They have lots of flower buds when I put them outside but they rarely open :(

I think the weather has something to do with it  ::)  :nowink:

This has been the best year I've had with them. I think all the rain has had something to do with it.

Strongly recommend "Green Goddess" which is hardy.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I really only like the basic white one  ;)

I grow Arum lillies in pot's in my pond. I take them out in winter to be on the safe side. They actually help to purify the water .

I just leave mine in the pond, and although the top growth turns to mush, they have always so far thrown up new shoots in the spring.  :)

I grew one from seed years ago and it has survived phenomenally well. It is in a shady area and average soil. It got so big I needed to move it and it is like digging up a really big, fat swede - the roots go down a long way too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
