Question about putting tom plants on compost heap
« on: October 07, 2010, 11:42 »
I am just clearing out my greenhouse as my cucumbers have come to an end as well as peppers and my yellow toms ( which I am taking down as they have been horrible). Are they all ok to put in my compost bins?

If they're disease free I can't think why not?

I found this year after I emptied my compost bin onto one of my beds I found lots of what I thought were weeds which turned out to be tomatoes. The seeds had survived the composting process and grew really well. Lots of hoeing needed!

Ah Bigben I have just read if you put toms in the compost they will germinate. Think they will be going in the green bin!

Apparently they even get them at the sewage works because they manage to survive going "though us". It is not a big problem unless like me you chucked away a glut of tomatoes that had gone soft. Then there were tons to germinate the next year.

Oh no, I did put tomatoes in the compost bin too! I didn't put the plants themselves because they didn't look good; they might have been just getting like that because of the cold, but since I'm a newbie I wasn't sure.
I'm off to see if I can fish out the tomatoes out of the bin....

I had just better grow toms that I like and that I won't be throwing away next year :)

I dump my toms soil into the area where I grew my spuds as its from the same family, and will not be growing any spuds the following year.
