If you're not after lots of heat, I don't think you can go wrong with jalapenos very useful in the kitchen, or the hot lemon are a little unusual and very prolific.

I grew Joe's long last year in the GH and had loads. There not too hot and you get 10" long chillis! I got quite a glut which I guess is ideal if preserving as you can make loads in one go. This year I have started Joe's long, birds eye and scotch bonnet. I do love my chillis :D I need a bigger greenhouse to keep up with demand though he he.

Only got my chillie seeds from Simpsons the weekend so sowed them today. Chillies are so slow to get going, they are one of the few things that really benefit from an early sowing.

In regards to initial post, Jalapeņos would be my choice, I myself sowed some today.

7 varieties this year, and all have been sowed now. First try of the 7 pot yellow habanero, the sister to the red one which is hotter than the Naga!!! Love growing chillies.

Yes, started them, but in the house! I planted them a couple of weeks ago! I have a propagator set up at 29/30 deg c as I have read 27/32 is the best temp for germination. I have a red/blue led board / grow light to help get them off to an early start which I turn on in the evenings. I will pot them up and move to the green house when the weather permits. Maybe I have over compensated for starting them too late last year?!

Personally, I like cayennes. Fuego (Nicky's Nursery has them this year) is very nice. A hint of citrus along with the heat, which cools a little on cooking. I like them seeded and sweated with some garlic in olive oil as a cheap and delicious sauce for spaghetti. Good in curry too. Nicky's Nursery charges for postage, so you might like to look elsewhere, mind. Bet you can find something good on D.T. Brown's - postage free last time I looked.

Grew Jalapeņo and Anaheim last year starting in March. Anaheim was way too weak for me, but was good for stuffing and seems to crop continuously regardless of weather. It's growing new chillies now in the conservatory while the jalapeņo appears to be dormant. Jalapeņo definitely added some heat to meals like omelettes, but certain cheesy food items and the heat just disappeared. I'm wondering if the dairy fat played a role?

So this year on top of the previous two, I'm trying two hotter varieties; tabasco and cayenne chilli. They are both in the 30,000 to 50,000 scoville range so it should be interesting to see if they have a better presence in meals without being too hot. I hear tabasco is a slow grower, so I'm overwintering a plant I started last year.

Starting in early February this time, got them all sat under a cheapo grow light as we speak.

Sown into heated and lit propagator.  Used half the pack (approx 6 seeds) and will sow again as insurance end of Feb.

Cayenne
Aji Amarillo (Mrs is from Peru so these are a must!)
Scotch Bonnet (red)
Trinidad X-Strain
Aji Escabeche
California Wonder
Rocoto

And Aubergine (not a chance but I'll give it a go for one year only)
