I'm trying to get my head around crop rotation and just when I thought I had it........ I didn't know where to fit in shallots and onions. Can anyone recommend a really simple crop rotation plan as I am now totally confused.
This will be my third year on my lottie plot and last year's plan was a bit of a fluke. The first year was a bit haphazard too so I want to make sure I get it right from now on. I've started the shallots off indoors and awaiting delivery of the onions. Potatoes are chitting nicely too.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

What veg families are you already growing?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Brassicas, legumes and roots although I don't understand why celeriac is not a root..... Or maybe it is.
Beetroot, sweetcorn, and loadssssssss of courgettes and squash.  :tongue2:
I'm raring to go but dont want to put stuff in the 'wrong' place.

Have a look at the different plans here - http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/crop-rotation/index.php

The number of years through which you rotate will depend partly on what you're growing and how much space.  Don't get too hung up about it - I do rotate but I suspect that my sequence won't be found in any book!  Also, when I was researching, I found different respected sources went in different sequences ... which tends to suggest that you can't get it too wrong  :)

Basic rule of thumb - don't manure before planting carrots / parsnips, and don't lime before planting potatoes.

hi yana, if your following crop rotation  - your alliums should have their own bed i.e. onions leeks and shallots all go together.

greetwell boy the reason why people dont use lime on their pots is becasue is causes them to scab - have you anywhere else to grow them - if not put them in where youve limed, you may get scab on them - but once peeled they'll taste the same!

Hi Yana, as Yorkie says do not get too hung up on it.  As long as you move your crops around and do not grow them in the same place every year they should be fine.  As you get more used to your lotty and the crops you grow everything seems to slot into place.

I use a four bed system.  Potatoes, Roots (including Onion, leeks & Garlic), Brassica, & Beans which I move round every year, everything else gets slotted in any spare space.  Lime your brassica's and fertilise your potatoes is basically all you need to know to get started.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the great advice and now I feel much better about it.
Just one last thing ..... I put leeks, onions and shallots all together in one bed? Won't the onions and shallots be out before the leeks go in, or just about to go in?

It could be close, but it's more likely your onions and shallots won't be ready until late July or early August, which is a bit too late for planting out leeks to grow to full size (that's why many people plant them to follow new potatoes to maximise ground usage.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
