Hanging baskets... what's in yours?
« on: July 07, 2011, 14:53 »
I usually do a mix of stuff but this year all I have in them is surfinas and bycopa (sp)... they're bloomin' marvellous.

So, what do you put in yours?

Multi coloured nasturtiums,

3 plants to each basket they look fab, there are so many flowers and the leaves/greenery is very dramatic.

I always choose blue (actually deep purple) surfinia petunias, which are unusual in that they have a lovely, strong scent (I think it's like vanilla) which is gorgeous to sit under in the summer evenings.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My one hanging basket doesn't usually work well so this year I just have trailing geraniums in it - contrasting colours and its doing wonderfully well.

I've never got round to doing my own baskets and this year my husband offered to run me down to the nursery (actually I think he only offered so as to stop me buying more plants as there's no room in the garden  ??? ) I chose the one at the back which is red geraniums, a touch of blue lobelia and a tiny bit of white bacopa - rather patriotic and husband decided he'd choose the front one, bearing in mind he never shows any interest in such things I thought why not? So, on the front we have a fushia only cone shaped willow basket.....it's so dull I can't begin to tell you!!! I so didn't want to upset him as he thought he was 'showing an interest', but I glower at the front one every time I pass it   >:(

As I live in a salt-wind area close to the sea, I have always found that they get bashed against the windows and dry out mega-quickly. This year, I didn't faff around but just planted up one large basket with some pansies, trailing carnations, some ice-plants (mesembryanthemums), some plug begonias, lobelia, marigolds and a geranium from Wilko that was supposedly damaged but it looked super-healthy to me and is doing better than any I have had. I didn't measure out the feed granules but scattered them in the compost. Though flowering is late this year, it is looking good stood on an upright pump base. Bacopa has done well in the past for me but I didn't get any this year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Don't usually bother, but this year we got two busy lizzie baskets for a fiver the pair (because they were there!) and they are really lovely at the moment. Absolute bargain. They would have cost more than that if we had grown them from seed.

Like Yorkie, I love those scented dark purple petunias, and always have them every year  :)

This year they are with light mauve petunias and some white bacopa .... and a couple of tomatoes
