Can someone tell me what this is?
« on: March 20, 2011, 19:08 »
I hope I'm in the right forum.  Apologies if I'm not.  Our friends have just moved north of the border and found their garden over-run with this stuff they've sent me a pic of.  They want to know if it's weeds and if they should dig it up or not.

I''ve no idea what it's called but I regard it as a weed. It is a tenacious pest and seems to enjoy growing in amongst my parents Lily-of-the valley making it hard to remove it.  :(

I'd be interested to know what it is called too.

It does have the same leaf shape but, if it is the same plant that we have, no such luck.  :(

As far as I can remember it has a small yellow flower.

Looks like Ground Ivy:

You may well be right DD.

The patch of ground where it grows here is bare at the moment so I wonder if BenandBills friends took the picture last year or theirs is an early starter.

Either way it is a b**** to get rid of once it's roots are tangled in with something else.  >:(

Leaf-wise, looks like a heuchera or heucherella and they should be ok to remove. Herbaceous geraniums that grow tight to the ground have a different leaf shape - they can be a nightmare to get rid of too - but I'm sure it's not that. Send a pic when it flowers and also of its root system as that will give us more of a clue.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Looks a bit like London Pride to me.  I think it's type of heuchera(?)...  If it shoots up long flower spikes with pretty pink things on the end, then that's it...
