Trillium, you are a fount of knowledge! Right, these beetles are driving me mad. I have tried general purpose insecticide, and they laughed at me. Next I tried one marked "doryphores", still they laughed,  so today have I tried the pyrethrum (as per Trillium's link) and having no isopropyl alcohol (what is this??) I substituted vodka, adding a splot of washingup liquid as a wetting agent. I have drenched all the plants concerned and will watch and wait.  Now of course they may well still laugh   or giggle in a drunken manner, but they will have one heck of a hangover. By the way Tode, having read up on those big beetles as per your photos I've decided they must go as well as the larvae can reek havoc.
