Dead Chickie! :(
« on: June 08, 2011, 16:03 »
So we were expecting 4 chicks this morning, having had 2 out of the 6 count as not viable, and my impatient mum went out & had a look this morning & two were pipping, we left them and as I was cleaning out the outside run for them & 'Lula I could hear them tweeting (adorable!) then went out not long ago & could see some wet, yellow feathers under mum, but they weren't moving, so I moved her over & the chickie was just lying there still :( for a minute we weren't sure if it was dead (dad picked it up but wouldn't let me look properly) but dad finished it off if it wasnt anyway :(

It's sad, but we still have the other one and possibly the other 2 eggs to hatch too! :) Although the other one had started pipping, it hasnt made any progress at all other than the initial hole (although it does make a lot of noise!), is this normal or is it stuck? I know they take a long time, but i'd have thought it would've done something, we noticed the hole at 8 this morning..

Hi RosiePosie and welcome to the forum!

So sorry to hear about the little chick that didn't make it. Like all new borns, they are very frail.

With regards to the others eggs that are pipping - be a little patient! If you have a read on here you'll see that some chicks can take over two days from pip to hatch, so I wouldn;t panic just yet. You're best off leaving it to the broody hen - she can feel if the eggs are moving and will keep an eye on them, so don't be tempted to move her too much as she may inadvertenty crush an egg.
Eggs often hatch at different times as well - as much as four days apart, so don't give up - it's very much a waiting game for now.

And of course keep us posted on developments!

I agree with HelenaJ here.  Pictures are compulsory  :D
My first egg hatched on Easter Monday and my second didn't hatch until three days later.
Good Luck  :)

The next one is here & is doing really well! It's very noisy & already trying to explore, so am a bit worried that it won't stay under mama enough but I'm sure she's taking care of it  :)

No sign of life from the other 2 remaining eggs but you never know :)

Trying to put picture up from when mama went outside but the size is way too big so am reducing it :)

Here it is :) just went out to check up, mummy went out & had some food & water & chickie tried to go exploring so when Talulah went back in chick wasn't under her but I'm sure it'll soon be huddled up, will check again soon. ~Rosie x
