What can i start sowing now for over winter.
« on: October 11, 2010, 21:49 »
Hi,

Ive had two allotment plots with my dad for coming up to a year now.
We got a good amount of crop from it like cabbages, brocolli, cauliflowers, leeks, onions.potatoes, peas, broad beans, runner beans,rhubarb,tomatos,radishes,beetroot........ the list goes on, so as far as our first year has gone i think we have done pretty well.
Now the winter is coming and most of what we have is thinning out and we have acquired a rotavator we were planning on preparing both plots for next spring when we can start over, hopefully on a blank canvas with no grass or weeds everywhere

However, im thinking of keeping a patch going through the winter.
I brought some broad bean and pea seeds which stated they can be sown in October.
But im really after some advice on what i can potentially grow over the winter.

Thanks in advance

Matt

There's not much that will actually grow over winter. If you plant beans, onions, etc at this time of year it's to give you an earlier crop next year...in theory.

I've just sowed some all year round lettuce and some chard in the greenhouse which might give me some leaves to pick at if the weather stays reasonable for a few weeks and it has a chance to get going.

Well, onions (specific varieties) can be over wintered, as can shallots and spring onions.

It's actually better to over winter garlic too, I've read, as they need a period of cold weather to do well. There's time to plant all of these but not my other suggestions - leeks and brussel sprouts.

You could also sow some green manure (winter mix).

look out for some cabbage seedlings to plant out: try the farm market if you've one near you?

and leeks seedlings too? not sure if it's too late for these, but sure someone more knowledgeable will advise!
