John - just read your diary entry re:monster ants, which reminded me....
Whilst digging, I've come across a couple of red ants nests - will these pose a problem to anything I grow, or can man and nature live in perfect harmony ?

Somewhere in the diary I think is an entry where I knelt in a red ants nest. That was not harmonious, especially as I was in shorts.

Perhaps due to the wood chippings we have on the site, we have quite a lot of red ants. I've not noticed any real problems with them apart from the above.  I certainly wouldn't put them into the 'pest' category.

Black ants farming aphids for the honeydew on roses is a bit of a problem in the garden but even that is hardly serious.  I'm not sure, but they may even do some good (red ants) keeping pests down.

If we could only teach them to eat slugs.
