Onion seeds through
« on: February 11, 2012, 08:57 »
This is my first year growing onions from seed instead of sets. I planted them a week ago in trays in the house thinking it be a couple weeks before they come through, well it took 5 days and they are now an inch high.
Its to hot in the house i think , but the only outside place is a cold frame on the lotty and a simple plastic green house thing in the garden.
Will  these will be to cold with the current weather?  im really not sure where to put them.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

This has cropped up (see what I did there) a few times in the past day or three.

They must go somewhere light and cool but frost free.

Hang in there for a day or two, if your forecast is similar to ours, it's going to start warming up and they can go in the cold frame or mini greenhouse, but for now, as cool as possible.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Assuming you're getting overnight temperatures about the same as here in Sheffield (-5C overnight, now -4.8C!) they would almost certainly freeze solid in either greenhouse or cold frame.

Mine are on the coolest windowsill in the house with aluminium foil behind to reflect as much of the available light back onto them as possible - it's not ideal but better than the alternatives!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

It was -9.3 overnight in York
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Beat you with -10C.   :tongue2:

According to the BBC news, it went down to -16C in Holbeach, so a couple of our Lincolnshire members may well be a bit chilly this morning.

Looked at the forecast for York, should be above freezing, day and night, from Monday onwards.

planted 50 white & 50 red onion seeds early january, all came through ok and when they got to about 1-2 inches tall put them in the greenhouse ( unheated) 3 weeks ago.
they had been doing well taking all the sunlight in.
Although its been cold the past few weeks in Lincolnshire they have been frost free & happy until last night       -13.5  .
i am sure i have lost 80% of them ( they have gone white at the base of the shoot , but still green at the top !!). I like to give them a gentle stroke / comb every day to strengthen the roots..but not today as i am sure they would just snap  :(
I will leave them as they are as i am sure bringing them in a warm house would shock them to death,
But my Garlics are having great fun in this cold weather  :D

My local forecast reckons we're going to be in positive figures tomorrow, with plus 7 on Mon and Tue and plus 8 on Wed - positively balmy :)

I think I'm going to stick my new spuds in the polytunnel tomorrow.
