carrots, fleece, environmesh etc
« on: April 27, 2008, 14:35 »
Have just planted some carrot seeds. The planter is 18inch high and I left the compost about 3inch from the top. I'm concerned about carrot fly and have read through the posts about fleece/environmesh.
Which in your opinion is best?
How do I secure it? I thought of putting stakes in the corner of the planter and attaching it to these.
Does anyone have any photo's demonstrating their carrots protected like this? And finally,  PHEW - do I leave it on until the last carrot is pulled?
As you can tell I am new to this, I once grew carrots in a small veggie plot and had no problems but I could have just been lucky, the more I read the more I learn

hi,
I think that the general rule of thumb is to leave it on untill all danger of an attack has passed. i'm sure some knowledgable folk around here will tell you when. I think enviromesh is the best bet, or rather, I've used it in the past and it worked very well.
stakes in the corner would work well.

also check if carrot fly is  a problem on your site. No one on our plot has ever really been hit with carrot fly so i didn't bother covering mine and I had a great crop.

My neighbour was hit with carrot fly despite planting spring onions with the carrots so I guess there is a risk.

In that case, enviromesh as Gwiz says is better - if more expensive - it last longer, and is stronger. Till cold autumn comes in your area, here last season  Christmas timish.

You do get an autumn generation if weather is mild.
