Perennial border flowers help please.
« on: April 14, 2009, 15:07 »
Perennial edging plants.

I want to put some perennial boarder plants around my path. 4/6 inches tall not too prolific. Soil is neutral and well drained.

Can you help me please.

Bergenias, some columbines and a lot of the sedums, thymes, dianthus, creeping phlox should fit the bill.

Thats a good list from Trillium to which I might add Diascia and Geranium ( cranesbill ) but you will have to choose varieties carefully if you really want to keep to 4-6in - that's very low for perennials, more in alpine/ rockery plant area
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

Thank you. What would you do?
The boarder is about 20ft long 3ft wide, curving out to 6ft. I don't have a clue!
At the bottom is a 6ft x 6ft lattice fence. What would look nice growing up the fence?

Thanks again.

Depends which way the fence faces ....

So does that mean the fence itself is north facing or in full sun all day?

No worries! Personall if I had such a premium spot I would go for an espaliered fruit tree as these are something I covet. They look great in spring and elegant in summer, and of course have the added bonus of edibles  :D Look at Ken Muir online for some good examples that will give you the idea.

What sort of thing are you after? Ornamental only evergreen with flowers (ceanothus with blue flowers perhaps or Fremontodendron with golden yellow flowers; flowers and berries and fab autumn colour Vitus vinifera (ornamental vine, or of course a grape vine itself) or you could consider roses .. loads to choose from with gorgeous scents

Just a word of advice though - don't plant things too close together as they always seem to get bigger than you thought they would... about 7ft apart would be what I'd do, so on your 6 ft x 6 ft trellis that really menas just one, with perhaps a cleamtis or two to scramble through and flower at different times in the year to the main attraction .(Unless you go for a fruit espalier that is and then I would just let it sing its own praises  :D)

Anyway, I hope that gives you a starting point to think about. Good luck with whatever you choose  8)
