Prolapse
« on: April 27, 2014, 19:11 »
One of the girls was hiding yesterday and this morning, so I grabbed her this afternoon to check her over. I'm guessing this picture shows a prolapse caused by an overlarge egg.

I rang the vet and have tried their advice of holding her over steaming water. I've then cooled the water and tried bathing her and I've tried vaseline on the egg and membrane edge. Nothing has worked so far. I cannot get to a vet till tomorrow. Can anyone suggest anything further that might work please? I'm keeping her separate from the rest of the chooks and probably in the house tonight.

Late response and I really don't know for sure but gently bathe in warm water and hope it comes away. Piles cream should reduce the prolapse once the egg is out.  Keep applying every day if necessary. Don't let other hens attack her.

Really hope your vet can help you.

When I was stuck recently I found the Omlet site helpful.

you can have a prolapse operated on - its pushed back in and held with an internal stitch  but the outcome will probably not be good , its open to infection being in a dirty place and she will probably tear the stitch and prolapse again if she comes back into lay

I had this with a new hen and decided against the opp and had her humanly PTS

sorry can't offer any positive advice  :(

Most prolapse cases end badly if she recovers from this one, the chances are she will have another at some point as the tissues are weaker and damaged. In my experience it's a case of not if but when it will happen again? How long is a piece of string? If she recovers from this one with treatment keep a carefully eye on her, because if your not around when it happens she will get attacked by the other hens  so sorry but it's what they do.

I think Gwen had some sort of problem early last week which was leading up to this. The vet agreed with me that it was probably not going to do her any favours to try and treat it and we went with euthanasia. I'm a bit grumpy at the price of £45 though.
