Maincrop onion sets --advice please
« on: January 10, 2016, 16:16 »
I have just been advised that my onion sets have been despatched and can apparently be planted out now.

Ground is good -- friable and not water logged

But if we have a really cold snap, will they survive? I usually plant them much laster than this, even in this area, but wondered what others do please?

I normally sit mine in a seed tray with an inch of potting compost in the bottom. I dont water them but leave them to start making roots. They easily tease apart when I'm ready for planting.

That's an idea, thank you!

I start mine off in small modules (about 40 to a seed tray) and then just plant them out like that - avoids any risk to the roots.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If it's too cold to get out to plant them then I'd do as suggested above. I don't think cold would hurt them but you do want to get them off to a good start.  I hate being outside freezing my butt off to plant stuff. You don't take as much care do you  :D   Then again if the ground is dry and friable and you don't mind being very cold ......  :)

onions would survive cold snap. it is just like they are sitting in fridge/freezer.

the sets may survive but most likely the crop in summer will have all bolted - cold can trigger the flowering stage that normally appears in the second year of growth

I would nor plant them until March. Just tip them out of the bag and store somewhere dry and cool until you want them.

That is something I hadn't thought of, thank you. I shall follow Salomon's advice and tp them out of their bags in the spare bedroom... they arrived this morning.
