hi i have been offered some free horse manure which would be most welcome, trouble is it is mixed with wood shavings which has been used as bedding. is this still ok for the allotment as i think i have read some were that it is useless when mixed with wood shavings?

I used to have deliveries of manure from horses bedded on shavings, seemed to work fine for me

Stack it, keep it damp and let it rot and use it over the winter. Wood shavings may deplete the soil of nitrogen which is absorbed at the start of the rotting process. It would be released back to the soil but may cause a temporary problem if applied fresh.

What I do is cover the area where the Pumpkins go with it then plant through it. Pumpkins don't mind fresh manure it also acts as a weed suppressor, then you dig it in later in the year ready for next year.
