Germinating Celeriac Seeds
« on: April 12, 2021, 09:03 »
Good Morning Fellow Gardeners,

I am new to the Forum so please make due allowances.

This is the third year that I have tried to grow celeriac from seeds each time with 0% germination success ( the previous year I gave up and bought plants!). I have tried most of the normal seed stockists, started them off with no heat, bottom heat, covering with compost (various depths), covering with vermiculite etc but absolutely no joy.
With 0% germination, I am led to believe it is something I am doing wrong, or not doing, rather than duff seeds.
Any ideas or tips would be most gratefully received.
Thanks and regards

John Martin

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum!

Celeriac seeds need light to germinate so I'd suggest sprinkling them on the surface of the compost, don't cover them with compost or vermiculite, and keep them somewhere that they'll get light.

100% success rate....
One chinesse take away tub.
Two pieces of kitchen paper cut to the same size of the above.
Seeds

Place one piece of kitchen paper in the tub, damp it down and place seeds, cover with the second piece of paper and make sure that is damp.
Place lid on and put in a warm place(my goes under the bathroom radiator)
Start checking for the seed to start sprouting (chitting) and when the sprut appears place in a plant plant or tray and lightly cover with compost run through a sieve and lightly water.

This methods works for all hard seed.

Hi
I managed to get a few to germinate the year but having problems of leggy seedlings which are very thin. Having probs with onions and leeks from seed, about 5inches tall but very thin and floppy. Any advice appreciated. Will be trying the damp paper method for parsnips and sweetcorn this year after disappointing results in previous years, thanks.

Mine came up like mustard and cress. Sown in a butter tube with drainage holes, just left on window sill. I used a sprinkling of vermiculite to cover seeds. Kings seeds

The only advice i give over celeriac seeds is have patience

I grew them for the first time last year and had given up on them as a failure and moved the sown seed pot in a corner of the greenhouse and, low and behold...they eventually made a showing and gave me a lovely crop!

i sowed some seeds ages ago and, again, had almost given up on them and yesterday, after many weeks i can see signs of life :)

My (limited) experience is give them time and you may be suprised.
