Thoughts for next season?
« on: November 03, 2009, 07:53 »
my first season of growing is coming to an end with successes and failiures!!

Mistakes have been made which i hope to learn from, but i am wondering what people are going to do differently with their vegetable sowing/planting as everyone has different ideas?

A few thoughts are:

What should i companion plant with squash/caujettes?

What is the best type of couliflour to grow as i understand some varieties dont beed their leaves held over?

can/should you companion plant with potatoes?

How can i stop my wife from wanting to plant sprouts?!! :D

Am interested in all peoples thoughs and new ideas

good day to you all

yeah, i wasnt prepared for our friendly caterpillars...although i dont actually like cabbages very much, they made a very nice meal for 1 or 2 caterpillars!!

i understand 7mm netting is the best to use as the butterfly can get through small holes!!

On that thought, does any one know the best places to get 7mm netting from?  am thinking about price!

"How can i stop my wife from wanting to plant sprouts?!!"

If it's a serious question John, just let her have her sprouts, but don't buy any netting: that should cure her

I have tried without netting!! the damn plants are invincible!! all my other brassicas have been eaten alive and for some reason this crop are indristructable.

If life on earth was wiped out tomorrow, all that would remain will be cockroaches and my bloomin sprouts!! :D

Swap you for mine? She won't let me grow sprouts ... :)

I've had good success with Candid Charm this year.  The topic of "What variety of Cauli" has come up a few times this season, and a number of other people said they have done well with that one.

The main thing I want to do differently is keep better notes on what varieties I am growing, how they grow, and how they taste.

Also, due to moveing house, I ended up buying lots of brassicas as plugs.  I may well carry on with this as they worked very well.  At 20p each they are still good value compared to a bought cabbage and so much less hassle.

Otherwise more of the same!

But please be careful about buying brassicas in as you wouldn't want to import club root :(

The Cauliflowers i grew this year were all year round and clapton both varieties were fantastic. I also grew some graffiti which has a  purple curd and romenesco they didn't do as good though..
I'll be doing the same next year having said that..
