Protection needed for Kale
« on: July 16, 2012, 14:43 »
Hi,

I rather rashly bought a pack of 15 kale plants from Aldi the other week.  They are all happily sitting in small pots in the cold frame but will need planting out soomer rather than later!

My question is what kind of netting will they need?  With regard to the height of the "cage" and the size of the hole of the netting?

Then I need to work out the cheapest way of achieving this... (I do not think I have anythin that can be utilised)

Thanks

Hannah :)

Which kale? cos there's a considerable size difference between the green dwarf kales and the tall ones ;)

I'm doing green curly kale and nero kale this year. It's very odd but the slugs are savaging the nero every time I let up on the pellets, but they're not touching the green curly kale at all. The green kale is growing a lot faster than the nero as well. They're not in the same bed, but they are in the same weather conditions :)

Last year I grew Cavolo De Nero and Purple Curly Kale. The Cavolo De Nero was under pea type netting and was savaged by cabbage white butterflies, slugs and anything else that fancied a quick meal. The Purple Standard Type Kale was grown outside without any protection and was a good crop and untouched by any pests. Conclusion - perhaps the butterflies and slugs know something we don't!!!!!

PS I am trying them both again but sowed them perhaps too late last week including some Swede's (delayed by the wet weather). :-(

I grew purple kale last year and it grew to about 3 foot + in total. I'm not aware of dwarf purple kale, but stand to be corrected. In fact if there is Dwarf Purple kale I'd happily grow it, less likely to rock in winds.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Mine was perfectly protected against the pigeons by mesh.

Unfortunately I also forgot to protect against those slimy critters ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had lovely Cavolo Nero last year, netted from pigeons.  This year slugs have eaten the lot, despite pellets and nematodes.
