Blight tool not updated
« on: July 17, 2012, 06:00 »
For several weeks now the first thing I have looked at when I log on is the UK Blight Map, to check the advance through my particular part of the South East - Mid Sussex. Nothing has been recorded for all of Sussex and Hampshire on this map for some weeks now and yet I read of the experiences of one from "the soggy Sussex coastal strip" a week ago.

On Sunday the blight was raging through the whole of my allotments and we've all had to cut or spray - mostly cut. I sent an email back to the Poato Council to advise the map should be updated. Today it still shows nothing.

As far as tools go, this one is about on a par with the desk calendar of the CEO of G4S showing "Olympics tomorrow - reminder to hire some guards"!

You could contact the people who run the website contaning the map and ask if it being updated. It might also be that people in your area just aren't reporting blight outbreaks, that's something else you/they could do.

Thanks Argyllie. I probably won't register now for email alerts - stable doors and missing horses - but will do so for future years. I do think it's disappointing that my email produced no response, whatever others may/may not have done. I've just looked on the blight map again and see that two adjacent postcodes on the Sussex/Hants border (PO18 and PO20) show unconfirmed reports with dates of yesterday and today. Haphazard or partial updating, though, makes it an even less reliable tool.

I too check the map and assumed it was being updated because there are a lot red blobs to be seen. They are closing in on NE Wales. I pay more attention the the list of postcodes, in particular the LL ones.

What I found very curious was that yesterday there was no humidity, but it rained all day!

I understand your concerns, but as its nothing to do with this site, we can't tell if its unreliable updating or lack of reporting. :(

It is being updated. If you scroll down the list of reported outbreaks, the last one's are for the 17th July.

as has been said before, if you don't report it/get them to check then it won't get on the map  :(
