what to do over winter?
« on: August 14, 2011, 12:58 »
well once my corn, beans and toms are done, do i need to do anything ready for next year? I am currently not sure what will go in the ground next year but is there anything i need to add? like seaweed or something. i will then cover the ground to stop the pesky weeds. lol

Have a look at this (from Allotment Help in the buttons above) which I think might help  :)

My wife and work mates think I'm obsessed, but I'd say manure it all (except where next year's root veg is going)...

You can still grow stuff though, both to eat soon, during the winter and for next spring  :D :D

There is an argument not to cover the ground over winter....

1st: not many weeds, well apart from chickweed will grow in the winter, and you can just dig in chickweed as a green manure anyway.

2nd: By using plastic etc to cover you are giving slugs etc a nice cozeeee bed to hibernate under and produce offspring.

I personally like to have my ground frosted to try and kill off as many pests as it can, although pests are hardy and not easily killed.

Winter time is tidy and move things about time for me and enjoy a chat over a hot mug of wine  Planning for next year, cleaning the greenhouses, any repair jobs, you are kept pretty busy if you look around you.

As you say Aidy, there are pros and cons to covering the ground up over winter.

For me, it depends what the next plan is ie if I have spread manure then I leave it uncovered to 'weather', but beds I am planning to get an early start on I cover with black plastic to avoid them waterlogging. (and pick off the slugs from underneath in the spring )

This also means that the remains of any perennial weeds - my plot was 'helpfully' rotovated several times before I took it over and I still have the aftermath  - are weakened and easy to remove from down deep.

But others do it differently and thier veg grow well,so... no rights or wrongs on this, like so many other things when it comes to the plot  :nowink:
