turnips

My turnips are about the size of a tennis ball, but are going to seed already, is this termed "bolting".

What could have caused it to happen....weather maybe

Yes & probably yes!

Usual cause is dry periods.

They could, however, have been harvested when smaller, tennis ball size is getting on a bit.

Hi.

What type are they? As DD said, most varieties now recommend you harvest when they are golf ball size or, slightly bigger as they will go 'woody' any larger.

You should be able to sow some more as they harvest quickly. Try the purple top Milan or, Tiny Pal which can go to Christmas.

"golfball size" does seem a little small for a turnip ?

I cant remember what type they were, they were bought as seedlings from a shop.

I have faithfully watered them, so it cant be dry periods that caused it, I was thinking along the lines of cold weather rather than dry weather.

Anyway.....I can harvest them now they are tennisball sized .....my first harvest of the year

It should have been a strawberry that I harvested first......but the kids beat me to it :roll:
