I don't grow maincrop because of blight on our site. But I find I am lifting all my spud crops in July-ish and then I have storage problems - ie no really cool space and masses of spuds at once.

Blight tends to hit our place in late August/early Sept so I was thinking of 3-4 staggered plantings of earlies to try and get fresher spuds for later storage and still avoid blight. Does this make sense?

Does anyone stagger their potato planting? And what are your results?

Could you cut the haulms off & leave in situ, that shouldn’t be a problem if blight is on the site

I'm not sure any advice from the UK is going to help in Vietnam orient96, if the location in your profile is correct.  Your question sounded like you were growing on a UK allotment site, so I'm not sure 

Here we can buy blight resistant types of potato which also helps.

I agree with Snows. Blight will get to them no matter how young they are, so it's better to cut the haulms off and get smaller potatoes rather than having none at all.

Here in the UK, there are some varieties (Sarpo) that are supposed to be blight resistant(?) though the two varieties that I tried although no blight on the tubers were just about uneatable!

I have not tried any of them again and none of the other plot holders on our allotments that I know off have ever tried them!

If you have not heard of Sarpo you could Google  for the info!

I have grown Setanta for several years and have not had a blight problem with them despite other varieties succumbing nearby.

They are a bit limited in that you cannot boil them but roasted they are to die for

well I have to say considering the dry season we had when we lifted our potato crop on Monday I was most surprised to find a plentiful supply of  good sized spuds very little blight and slug damage having planted around a half acre of Cara


i took us around an hour and half to lift  the crop with the aid of a sculffle and my trusty ferguson tractor very please with the variety Cara my choice for next years planting as my main crop
